American, born Hungary: Kertész, Capa, and the Hungarian American Photographic Legacy

Marvel at the poetic street scenes, Hollywood portraits, fashion photos, and images of war produced by more than 30 Hungarian-born artists who transformed photography in the 20th-century.
Curated by Alex Nyerges, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Director and CEO, with Károly Kincses, founding director of the Hungarian Museum of Photography, American, born Hungary: Kertész, Capa, and the Hungarian American Photographic Legacy examines the pioneering artistry that often emerged out of backdrops of persecution and perseverance.

American, born Hungary follows a remarkable number of émigrés and exiles from Hungary to Berlin and Paris and then on to New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, where they reinvented themselves and American photography. This exhibition is the first full examination of their circuitous journeys to the United States—in the aftermaths of two world wars and Hungary’s student-led revolt in 1956—and the wondrous artistic legacy that developed along the way.

More than 170 stunning, mesmerizing, and surreal photographs capture the unexpected beauty of fleeting shadows, gritty urban life, glamorous celebrities, and the broken promises of America. Included are works by notables such as André Kertész, László Moholy-Nagy, Martin Munkácsi, and György Kepes, along with less familiar names whose photos are instantly recognizable. One example is Robert Capa, a pioneer of modern photojournalism whose photos of Omaha Beach on D-Day are among the most famous of World War II.

Providing a missing chapter in art history, the exhibition’s focus is the astounding impact of Hungarian-born artists on photography in the United States, especially in urban centers. Highlights include photos by Moholy-Nagy, whose avant-garde beginnings in Dessau, Germany, inspired a “New Bauhaus” that sought to establish the Windy City as a design incubator; work by tailor and photographer John Albok, whose photographs were praised by the New York Times; and André de Dienes, whose portraits of cinema’s icons, including Marilyn Monroe, helped fuel Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Before opening at VMFA on October 5, American, born Hungary opened at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, on April 5, 2024, marking the grand opening of a newly renovated exhibition space at the museum. After its run at VMFA, the exhibition will travel to the George Eastman Museum, the International Museum of Photography and Film and the George Eastman House, in Rochester, New York, where it will open September 26, 2025.

to Jan 26

A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845

Your ticket to A Long Arc will also grant you admission to American, born Hungary.

Take an epic journey through the American South from 1845 to today. In A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845, presented at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, encounter the everyday lives and ordinary places captured in evocative photos that contemplate the region’s central role in shaping American history and identity and its critical impact on the development of photography. This is the first major exhibition in more than 25 years to explore the full history of photography in and about the South.

A Long Arc explores the American South’s distinct, evolving, and contradictory character through an examination of photography and how photographers working in the region have reckoned with the South’s fraught history and posed urgent questions about American identity. Organized chronologically, the exhibition traces the South’s shifting identity in more than two hundred photographs made over more than 175 years.

The exhibition’s individual sections delve into the themes of photography before, during, and after the Civil War; documentary photography of the 1930s and ’40s; images of a post–World War II South in economic, racial, and psychic dissonance with the nation; photography as catalyst for change during the civil rights movement; reflective narrative photography of the late 20th century; and contemporary photography examining social, environmental, and economic issues.

A Long Arc presents a richly layered archive that captures the region’s beauty and complexity. Offering a full visual accounting of the South’s role in shaping American history, identity and culture, the exhibition includes photographs by Alexander Gardner, George Barnard, P.H. Polk, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Marion Post Wolcott, Robert Frank, Clarence John Laughlin, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Bruce Davidson, Danny Lyon, Doris Derby, Ernest Withers, William Eggleston, William Christenberry, Baldwin Lee, Sally Mann, Carrie Mae Weems, Susan Worsham, Carolyn Drake, Sheila Pree-Bright, RaMell Ross, and others.

The exhibition is co-curated by Sarah Kennel, PhD, VMFA’s Aaron Siskind Curator of Photography and Director of the Raysor Center, with Gregory J. Harris, The Donald and Marilyn Keough Family Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845 is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

Profs & Pints Richmond: Encountering Cryptids

Advance tickets: $13.50

Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Encountering Cryptids,” on the cultural, historical and psychological significance of beings that may exist only in lore, with Joshua Barton, lecturer in English at Virginia Commonwealth University and scholar of horror.

Some started out as anecdotes shared by explorers. Others were created as cautionary tales, or literally were just developed as spooky stories for kids. Regardless of their origins, they’re now entrenched inhabitants of our nation’s landscapes, their lives perpetuated through tales told by communities that believe they’re real.

They’re cryptids with names like Sasquatch, Mothman, the Jersey Devil, Ogopogo, the Flatwoods Monster, and the Beast of Bray Road. And your single best chance to get to know them might be by coming to the Triple Crossing-Fulton taproom for this talk by Joshua Barton, a scholar of horror who has earned a following here with incredibly entertaining past talks on horror films and Christmas ghost stories.

He'll look at the genesis of the tales themselves and what they tell us about historic approaches to the unknown. He’ll discuss how tales of cryptids reflect societal fears, inspire local legends, and connect communities through shared myths, and he’ll examine the impact of cryptid tales on modern storytelling and local tourism.

Turning his attention to specific cryptids, Barton will describe how the Jersey Devil speaks to our nation’s puritan roots and our collective fear of evil. The chupacabra reflects anxieties over the blending of cultures, while Bigfoot and Mothman stand out as huge generators of tourism revenue.

You’ll learn how the study of such creatures—cryptozoology—exists at the intersection of oral folklore and modern belief, and you’ll probably emerge from the talk eager to tell cryptid tales of your own. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Profs & Pints Richmond: Existence Beyond the Body

  • Triple Crossing Beer - Fulton (map)

Advance tickets: $13.50

Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Existence Beyond the Body,” a discussion of studies of consciousness after death, with researchers from the Division of Perceptual Studies in the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine.

There aren’t any easy scientific explanations for “out-of-body” or “near-death” experiences or for memories of past lives. Yet such extraordinary experiences are taken seriously by UVA’s Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), which for nearly 60 years has rigorously examined scientific evidence related to the mind’s relationship to the body and the possibility of consciousness surviving physical death.

Learn about such research and what it has yielded so far at a talk given by four of the division’s researchers from the fields of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences: Assistant Professor Marina Weiler, Assistant Professor David Acunzo, Research Assistant Professor Marieta Pehlivanova, and Research Associate Professor Philip Cozzolino.

In a talk tackling some of the biggest questions facing humankind, the researchers will discuss their scientific approach to making sense of extraordinary human experiences and their impact on individuals. They’ll also present evidence that they have derived from lab-based experiments and other studies.

The researchers will describe the seminal work that led to the creation of DOPS—studies of children who speak at length and in great detail about what appears to be a past life—and they’ll talk about how it continues to this day with the help of new neuroimaging techniques. You’ll learn how DOPS also leads in the study of out-of-body experiences, during which people have the unique sense of feeling disembodied or existing in space away from their physical body.

The researchers also will discuss their thorough investigations of near-death experiences—intensely vivid (and often life-transforming) experiences that occur when individuals are close to death or clinically dead and subsequently resuscitated. These often occur during cardiac arrest, which may lead to the ceasing of brain activity, or under deep general anesthesia—conditions in which no awareness or sensory experiences should be possible.

Some of the most profound experiences that people have are shrouded in mystery. This talk won’t provide all of the answers, but at least will bring you up to speed on some intriguing efforts to find them. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Profs & Pints Richmond: Nosferatu Versus Dracula

Profs & Pints Richmond: Nosferatu Versus Dracula

Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Nosferatu Versus Dracula,” on the rivalry between two versions of a vampire and its lasting impact on how we think of their kind, with Stanley Joseph Stepanic, who teaches a course on Dracula and vampire folklore as an assistant professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of Virginia.

The Robert Eggers remake of Nosferatu that was released to acclaim this past Christmas Day represents just the latest effort to bring this vampire to life. It’s tempting to credit the acclaimed German silent film director F.W. Murnau as the first to do so, but doing so obscures how much Murnau owed to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, who continues on his own to pop up on the big screen every few years.

Come dig up the vampires beneath the vampires with the help of Dr. Stanley Stepanic, whose course on Dracula ranks as one of UVA’s most popular and who previously has given several excellent Profs and Pints talks.

He’ll discuss the folkloric origins of Stoker’s Count Dracula and how Nosferatu and its lead character Count Orlok fit into the picture. You’ll learn how these reimagined versions of long-feared undead beings helped cement the vampire’s status as one of the most enduring and prominent symbols of the human condition throughout the world.

Though considered a landmark of horror fiction today, Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula was not initially a success. Stoker died in relative obscurity, remembered primarily for his contributions to theater operations and not his writing. What brought attention to the novel was a copyright lawsuit alleging that Murnau had essentially robbed Stoker’s grave by turning Dracula into his 1922 silent film Nosferatu.

The subsequent legal battle over the film and the media attention generated by it led Stoker's widow, Florence, to move forward with a dramatic production of Dracula which was first performed in England in 1924 and then on Broadway in the United States in 1927. These stage productions in turn led to the first proper film version of Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi and released in 1931.

Through such developments, Count Dracula evolved from a relatively minor villain that introduced little that was new to vampire literature into a popular culture phenomenon who has appeared in the media in countless forms. He and his various offspring will loom larger in your imagination as a result of this talk. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

The Moonlight Healers with Elizabeth Becker

Local author Elizabeth Becker will be in the store talking with Rachel McRady!

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

For generations, the Winston women have possessed an unspoken magical gift: they can heal with the touch of a hand. It’s a tradition they’ve always had to practice in secret, in the moonlight hours, when the fireflies dance and the whippoorwill birds sing.

But not every healer has rightfully passed on this knowledge to her descendants, and for young Louise Winston, the discovery of her abilities comes in less-than-ideal circumstances—she brings her best friend back from death following an accident, the day after he professed his long-held feelings for her, five days before she’s supposed to move away.

Desperate for answers, and to avoid this new reality between them, Louise escapes to her grandmother’s lush Appalachian orchard. There, she uncovers her family’s hidden history in a tattered journal, stemming back to her brave great-grandmother who illicitly healed Allied soldiers in war-torn France. Dancing Woman with Elaine Neil Orr
Feb

6:00 PM18:00

Dancing Woman with Elaine Neil Orr

We are excited to welcome Elaine back to the store! She will be talking about her new book with Patty Smith in store.

About the Book:

It’s 1963 and Isabel Hammond is an expat who has accompanied her agriculture aid worker husband to Nigeria, where she is hoping to find inspiration for her art and for her life. Then she meets charismatic local singer Bobby Tunde, and they share a night of passion that could upend everything. Seeking solace and distraction, she returns to her painting and her home in a rural town where she plants a lemon tree and unearths an ancient statue buried in her garden. She knows that the dancing female figure is not hers to keep, yet she is reluctant to give it up, and soon, she notices other changes that make her wonder what the dancing woman might portend.

Against the backdrop of political unrest in Nigeria, Isabel’s personal situation also becomes precarious. She finds herself in the center of a tide of suspicion, leaving her torn between the confines of her domestic life and the desire to immerse herself in her art and in the culture that surrounds her. The expat society, the ancient Nigerian culture, her beautiful family, and even the statue hidden in a back room—each trouble and beguile Isabel. Amid all of this, can she finally become who she wants to be?

About the Author:

Elaine Neil Orr was born and grew up among the forests and rivers of Southwestern Nigeria. After settling in North Carolina as a literature professor, she turned to creative writing. She first published a memoir, Gods of Noonday, followed by two novels, A Different Sun and Swimming Between Worlds, finalist for the 2019 Phillip H. McMath Post-Publication Book Award in fiction. Dancing Woman is her third novel. Elaine has received numerous prizes and awards, including most recently the 2023 John Ehle Prize and the 2021 Denny C. Plattner Award in Creative Writing. She is a Professor of English at North Carolina State University. She also serves on the faculty of the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband, Andy, and their beloved pup, Sam.

Patricia Smith is the author of the novel The Year of Needy Girls, a 2018 Lambda Literary Award finalist. Her nonfiction has appeared in several anthologies and literary magazines. Thrice nominated for a Pushcart, she received a Special Mention for her essay “Holy War.” She lives in Chester, VA with her wife and teaches American Literature and Creative Writing at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.

FUNK + SOUL PARTY! at Révéler Experiences

Orbital Music Park presents a weekly jam session celebrating funk, soul, and R&B classics.

Get up, get into it, and get involved! This weekly show begins with a short set of funk and soul classics performed by Orbital Music Park's collective ensemble, featuring vocalist Therocelle Moore. Next up is a jam session, where players of all levels and instruments are formed into bands that perform their unrehearsed version of a tune pulled at random from a playlist of funk classics and deep cuts. The experience is part show, part jam session, and a wall-to-wall dance party.

Players of all levels and instruments are welcome. The OMP team curates ensembles as the night unfolds - so the bands are different every song and every week! Favorite artists include: Prince, Parliament / Funkadelic, The Meters, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Etta James. Instruments provided: drums, bass and amp, baby grand piano, guitar amps, Hammond organ, percussion, and much more.

Audience participation is encouraged, whether you're dancing in your seat or on your feet. Play some bongos, have a beer, and jam with the band.
