9 of Our Favorite Spots For Chinese Food In & Around Richmond

No, I’m not writing this guide *just* to convince my husband to order Chinese for dinner so I can conduct further research, but… it should help my case, right? In the meantime, IMO, there’s never a bad time for dine-in or takeout when it comes to this particular cuisine, and with so many delish options in Richmond, you could literally try a new place every night of the week and still have more options for the next. Which is precisely how I’ve become close, personal friends with many Kung Pao chicken dishes in the city. And I will probably invite one over tonight.

Peter Chang

The Kung Pao chicken at Peter Chang was my first close, personal friend when I moved to Richmond, but it’s not the only mouth-watering dish at this Chinese-food staple. Make a meal of your visit and order the Minced Chicken Lettuce Wrap or any of the other delish small plates to get you started.

Chen’s Chinese Restaurant

Chen’s Kung Pao chicken is another one I get together with frequently, and when you’re looking for a lot of bang for your buck on whatever dish, this is a particularly great spot. And when you’re ready for din *now*, you can often expect your meal from Chen’s to arrive quickly, derailing all hangry outbursts.

Yen Ching

Yen Ching offers a warm environment to enjoy along with its many gourmet Chinese dishes, which pay homage to six major regions of China. We’ve seen multiple people say its deliciousness has ruined other go-to spots for them (the ultimate compliment). Get some Crab Rangoon, get some Sesame Beef, and get some extra to take home — you’re gonna leave wanting more.

Hunan East is often listed when you’re searching for places to enjoy some Chinese cuisine, and for good reason. The spot fancies itself a “relaxed Chinese joint furnishing hearty, straightforward meals in a functional setting,” and really, what more do we need?

Full Kee Chinese Restaurant

As Richmond Times-Dispatch wrote, Full Kee is the one place in RVA for classic Cantonese food, but they offer other must-haves, too: “baskets of shrimp dumplings and parcels of sticky rice wrapped with lotus leaves; black bean clams and ginger-scallion steamed fish; clay pots of braised lamb and plates of garlicky snow-pea shoots.” They’ve also been in town for decades; you can’t get much more tried and true than that.

Fat Dragon Chinese Kitchen & Bar

Fat Dragon comes from the same folks who brought us many other Richmond favorites, like: Boulevard Burger & Brew, Osaka Sushi & Steak, and Pizza & Beer of Richmond (just to name a few). Its reputation proceeds it, so you know you’ll be getting the good stuff when you order here.

Dumpling & Noodle Cart

Dumpling & Noodle Cart has taken its food truck ops to a brick-and-mortar set-up in recent months. The restaurant now (also) lives in Carytown, serving up two types of fried dumplings: chicken or pork; two types of cold noodles: sesame and sweet sour spicy; two types of hot steamed buns: pork and veggie; and chicken soup. In other words, you’ll have a hard time making decisions here; order one of everything.
