RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Keya Wingfield: While a few local favorites represented Richmond on the Cooking Channel this week, Keya brought Richmond to the Food Network as the winner of Spring Baking Championship, Season 7 last February. She was born in Mumbai, India, moved to the United States 15 years ago, and has been baking, cooking, and creating in the River City ever since!

THE LATEST:

FOOD & DRINK NEWS

Won’t you take me to Funkytown?: Funktastic Meads, also known as Untappd’s fourth-highest-rated meadery/brewery (!), now has a taproom in Midlothian as of last week. (Richmond Magazine)

Comfortably uncomfortable: That's the experience Cocodrilo's owners promise diners when their new "Latin fired" spot opens just outside Richmond this spring. (Cocodrilo)

Hopping into Union Hill: Fat Rabbit is bringing its sweet menu to the cozy corner spot that Pomona Plants once called home. While we’ll miss the cafe, we have to say, this sounds like great news for those with a sweet tooth! (Instagram)

There’s ~sno~ in the forecast: The owners of Ruby Scoops are expanding their cold-treat catalogue with a sno-ball shop in Jackson Ward in early March. (Style Weekly)

Feeling jubilant: Lillie Pearl owners just signed on to open a new spot in Manchester — Jubilee, a tribute to the black community and extension of the restauranteurs’ American and West African menu offerings. (Richmond BizSense)

The Fan just got a little hotter: Blue Habanero Street Tacos & Tequila plans to move into Strawberry Street Cafe's old digs and start whipping up tacos, guac, tequila drinks, and a lot more by the end of March. (Richmond Biz Sense)

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS

A food festival, but make it a drive-thru: The beloved Richmond Jewish Food Festival is back for its 14th iteration this Sunday, and this time, it’s a “heat ‘n’ eat” event. All eats are for online ordering only, and customers will be able to pick up their orders to enjoy at home. (The Richmond Jewish Food Festival)

Make sure you’re bundled up: Always, but especially if you’re running in the RRRC Frostbite 15K, taking place this Sunday at Final Gravity Brewing Co. in Lakeside. (Road Runners Club)

Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.: HandsOn Greater Richmond fittingly refers to MLK Day as “a day on, not a day off” and will honor the American leader and activist through community service, including “Mending Walls” panel and group discussions and a weekend of volunteer opportunities. Richmond Symphony will celebrate him through music with its concert, Dreams of Freedom featuring “My Hero, Martin” by Morgan Avery McCoy Inc.

Flowers for free: Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is opening its doors for free this week! Spot the January blooms outside, then warm up in the Conservatory as needed. (Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden)

Weekly Giveaway

Union Market

Maybe you’re loving these recent chilly temps; maybe these recent chilly temps are making you ask, “Wait, how many more months until summer?” Whatever the case, Union Market is where you want to be. Cozy up inside their newly renovated dining room, or (if it’s, say, above 40 outside?) feel nostalgic for shorts-and-a-tee weather on their tented and heated patio.

This week, we’re giving away a $10 gift card for the Church Hill favorite, and that just so happens to cover the cost of their “pick two” lunch combo! Choose any pairing of a half-sandwich, soup, salad, or side, and enjoy lunch on us.

To enter to win: Tell us your favorite way to stay warm in the winter!

Last week: Congratulations to last week’s winner, Melanie W., for winning our Ninja Kombucha giveaway!
