Hi, hi, hi!👋

Our dearest Paige is OOO for a much-deserved, European escapade, and we’re very jealous over here, but as we wait for her next wine/cheese/pastry/anything-French update(s), we’re keeping ourselves busy with all the good-eats-and-drinks and happenings around town in our neck of the woods.

Did you catch the new spots we recommended in The Trendspotter for this month? There’s housemade naan, there’s mac and cheese, and there’s ice cream and more ice cream to be had, people.

What about The Family Calendar? We’re smack-dab in the middle of James River Week, and there are still lots of ways for you to get out and about with your home team to celebrate the James.

And of course, football season has officially kicked off, and we’ve rounded up a handful of our favorite spots to catch a game (and enjoy some delicious sips and snacks) in the city all season long and into the next one.

Then, there’s allll the other stuff you’ll want to know about in the days ahead. Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including ghost tour info, ten new businesses hitting the Arts District, where to buy your fall plants, and more.

THE LATEST:

THIS WEEK’S TO-DOS

Belly up to the bar: We’re in the midst of Negroni Week, folks. This seven-day celebration (in its tenth year, by the way) teams up with local restaurants and bars to serve classic Negronis and some with a twist. The event raises money for Slow Food, an org “working to ensure everyone has access to good, clean, and fair food.” Do some good, one (responsible) sip at a time. (Negroni Week)

Looking for plans tonight?: The Queerantine Tour is throwing down at The Camel, starting at 8 pm. Head to the Broad St venue for a night of music, dancing, and general enjoyment, as Queerantine founders, Kisos and Cory Stewart, bring their pandemic-born, once-digital show to life. (Queerantine)

Your agenda is flourishing: This Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is hosting its Fall PlantFest. Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists will be there to help you pick out the best plant(s) for your home, and you can even bring your pup if you so choose. The event itself is free; just bring your green for some green (and red, orange, yellow, etc.). (Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden)

Another Oktoberfest to put on your radar: St. Benedict is hosting its Oktoberfest this weekend, from Friday, September 16, through Sunday, September 18. Pack up the fam, and make your way to the Museum District for a few days of live music, dancing, shopping, kids’ activities, and German eats and drinks. The event is free to attend! (St. Benedict Oktoberfest)

It’s pigment to be for your weekend plans: The RVA Street Festival is currently in prep mode for this weekend’s tenth anniversary celebration. Friday through Sunday, September 16 through 18, visit the Power Plant building along the Haxall Canal for live mural painting, music, beer and food trucks, and other vendors selling art and more. (RVA Street Art)

GENERAL TO-DOS

TEN new businesses to keep an eye on: Given a $100,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, Venture Richmond teamed up with the Metropolitan Business League to recruit existing small, women-, and minority-, and immigrant-owned businesses to set up shop in the Arts District. Venture Richmond recently announced the ten tenants they landed on, and they run the gamut from salons to an org focused on maternal health and reproductive justice. Get to know the whole list of businesses and business owners here. (Instagram)

For your spooky szn agenda: Eerie Nights Ghost Tours are back in business for the fall! On Friday and Saturday evenings throughout September and October, grab someone (you can hide behind), and head out on a walking tour of several historic and haunted sites in the city. Tickets are 20 bucks per person, and tours last about 90 minutes. (Eerie Nights)

Weekly Giveaway

Second Bottle

This wine and snack shop in Church Hill is one of our very favorite spots to stock up on reds, whites, tinned fish, and Cooper head-pats. We usually go with the Lieu Dit Melon de Bourgogne 2020 or the La Collina Quaresimo Lambrusco 2020, but we truly haven’t gotten one bad rec here.

This week, we’re giving away a $25 gift card to Second Bottle. Grab a bottle on us (and a second for good measure)!

To enter, tell us: If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with your extra time?

Last week: Congratulations to last week’s winner, Stephani C., for winning our Whisk giveaway!
