Ed 244: Rams House, Boutique Hotel, Volunteer Opp

Hey, friend!👋

I hope you had a nice day celebrating love yesterday! I don't know about you, but my feed is pretty much just love and Rihanna, and I'm not mad about it at all. Also on the list of things I’m not mad about is the Eagles losing the Super Bowl (not sorry, Philly fans!).

Moving on…I’m convinced adulthood is just repeating, “is it really already (insert current month here)” over and over again until we die. Seriously, I cannot believe it’s already the middle of February (see what I mean?). I feel like it was just yesterday that Kelsey was going out on maternity leave, and I was starting my guest appearance in The Weekly Insider. She returns to the keyboard in just two weeks!

Meanwhile, Paige just finished this month’s book club read, and she said it was insanely good. Join our members-only book club, read I’m Glad My Mom Died, and meet us next Wednesday, February 22, at Jardin at 6 pm.

Lastly, don't forget next Monday is Presidents Day, Tuesday is Election Day, and Wednesday is National Margarita Day (50% off margaritas at all Casa Del Barco locations — spread the word!).

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including Chef Michael Lindsey’s latest restaurant announcement, a cool volunteer opportunity, belated Valentine’s plans, and more.

SOCIAL NEWS

Sweet boutique hotel: After recently announcing the closure of Shyndigz, the owners have revealed plans to build a 19-room boutique hotel in its place! According to their interview with Richmond Bizsense, the hotel is a passion project for the couple who loves to travel to boutique hotels. The rooms will be designed to accommodate groups and get this — their target guests are folks planning ladies’ weekends and bachelorette parties💅 Meanwhile, Shyndigz Market will remain open at 1833 W Cary St until they move across the street to 1912 W Cary St. (Richmond BizSense)

Ice in Carytown: Suzy Sno, the New Orleans ice ball sister of Ruby Scoops, is on the move (their third since opening), and this time, they’ll be chilling in Carytown! Moving into the former Tipsy Cupcake space, they’re slated to open next month. (Richmond Mag)

The Mill no more: Northside friends, your longtime neighborhood joint has been sold “to a local experienced restaurateur,” according to this CBS 6 article. The Mill has been a staple in the community since 2011 but has been experiencing staffing shortages since COVID. Their last day of service will be February 26 if you want to stop in one last time. Hopefully, the new concept will offer the same cozy vibes! (CBS 6)

Volunteer opp: Sportable is an adaptive sports organization in Richmond that provides access to competitive and recreational sports across Virginia to athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Their programs span across sports from wheelchair basketball to wheelchair tennis, power chair soccer, lacrosse, road racing for marathon training, and beyond. They’re looking for volunteers to help sustain the programs and support staff. If sports are your thing, this is a really cool volunteer opportunity! Their next big event is the River City Classic, a wheelchair basketball tournament happening March 4-5 with teams coming in from all over the country.

Playing With Light: That’s the name of the new light-focused exhibition at The Science Museum of Virginia. Using basic physics principles, innovative interactive experiences and a sense of fun, the exhibition offers the opportunity to explore our world and how it is illuminated through 22 exhibits with a multitude of outcomes. You have til August 20 to catch this one. Adult tickets to the museum are $16.

New diner opens: Taking over the former Kitchen 64 space, Brick House Diner officially opened to the public last Wednesday! This is the fourth location for the local restaurant chain from the Routsis family. Their first location in Midlothian has racked up 1,737 Google reviews with a 4.6-star rating! It definitely seems worth checking out. (Richmond BizSense)
