Ed 248: Octopus Teacher, Skillet Cinnamon Roll Ice Cream, Ted Lasso Watch Party
Hi! Hello!
How’s your week going? Some of us on the RVAx team have had sick kiddos at home for a few days, so I’m writing this to you from…
… well…
… the depths of hell, kind of.
Everyone’s on the up and up now, though, so we’re just about out of the Unwell AF Woods!
For me, personally, this was a great reminder that House Calls for Kids began serving the Greater Richmond area this month. Def keep them in mind the next time your little ones are in need of some medical TLC. The waiting room at an in-person urgent care is a hoot and all, but why go out when you can sit at home and sweat through your jeans on the third day of your child’s grueling virus and Google “ways to get a toddler to take medicine” and wonder if putting sprinkles on top and calling it “unicorn potion” will work and find out no, not really?
But enough about me! It’s another great week in the River City as we head toward St. Patrick’s Day (this Friday!); let’s take a looksie at some goings-on around town.
Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including who’s moving to RVA in droves, a Hasbro suggestion box, where to see Alice (of “in Wonderland”) do aerial stunts, and more.

Maymont’s new octopus: The Robins Nature Center is welcoming a new octopus to its aquatic quarters, and visitors can start popping by to see it this Friday, March 17! The li’l mollusc-y guy will remain on display for the next year, adding to the spot’s environmental education offerings for local schools and other Maymont patrons. Along with its debut, and as part of this week’s ongoing RVA Environmental Film Festival, Maymont will also screen (for free!) My Octopus Teacher, starting at 5 pm.

SOCIAL NEWS
I scream, you scream, we all scream: For Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams! The spot responsible for those colorful pints you always see at your go-to grocery store has opened its Richmond scoop shop in Carytown. Enjoy flavors like Gooey Butter Cake, Lemon and Blueberries Parfait, and Skillet Cinnamon Roll in store, or if you’re looking for the sweet treats to come to you, local delivery is available. (Instagram)
Roll the dice: The River City is getting its own version of Monopoly, featuring historic landmarks and popular outdoor spots and local businesses. Through this coming Monday, March 20, you can submit recs for RVA places the creators should include. Then, make plans to add the board to your very own game closet/shelf/pile when it’s released this fall. (RVAHub)
Migrating south for the winter (spring, summer, and fall): More NoVA residents are making the move down I-95 in recent years. According to the University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center for Public Policy, the average number of DC-ish folks relocating to RVA jumped a whopping 36% for two years in a row (2020 and 2021). The low(er) cost of living is the main pull; reported the Richmond Times-Dispatch, “The median price of a home in DC in December was $513,315, while the median price for a home in Richmond in 2022 was $356,000.” Just wait ‘til Northern Virginians get a li’l Blanchard’s in their systems, you know? (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Not 1968 but a year after: Apollo: When We Went to the Moon begins its stopover at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture this Saturday, March 18. Chronicling the timeline from the beginning of the Space Race, the exhibition will feature items from the US Space & Rocket Center’s archives and will highlight the important role Virginia played in getting America to the moon. FYI, entry to the museum is just 10 bucks and includes admission to this exhibit. (Virginia Museum of History & Culture)
We’re all mad here: Alice in Wonderland is quite literally taking flight at the Dominion Energy Center this month. On March 24 and 25, peep the beloved tale-turned-flick on stage in aerial form, as SOUL Aerial and Performing Arts puts on its own version of the Lewis Carroll story. More than 60 performers, ages five to 17, will bring the production to life with dance, gymnastics, and aerial skills. (Richmond magazine)
Who’s up for a car ride?: New Kent County has plans to open a Buc-ee’s in 2027. At its Virginia location, the Texas-originated convenience store of all convenience stores will put down roots off I-64 at Exit 211 and boast a 74,000-square-foot store, 120 fueling positions, 557 parking spaces, 24 Tesla charging spaces, and 10 bus and RV parking spaces, along with its famous barbecue eats and beaver-themed merch. Making our road-trip plans ASAP. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
