RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Pink Room: Brittanny Anderson (Metzger Bar & Butchery, Brenner Pass, Black Lodge) opened this ~extremely cute~ spot in Union Hill in the spring, but things have hit a bit of a speed-bump in recent weeks. The James Beard-nominated chef gives a status update on Insta at @brittannywith2ns and @pinkroomrva and lets folks know how they can help and when they can (potentially) expect things to be up and running again.

SOCIAL NEWS

We love a rebrand: Maymont has a new look (branding-wise, that is). The 100-acre Victorian estate and public park announced its updates via Press Release last week, highlighting the community’s input as inspo for the changes. “Working with local research consultancy SIR, Maymont gathered input through in-depth surveys with the community and Maymont members over the past year and compared it with nearly a decade of similar findings. Creative agency Bonfire Red furthered the research with a series of conversations with community leaders, Maymont supporters and staff. Bonfire Red then guided Maymont through a brand refresh process deeply grounded in the many reasons people love the 100-acre landmark.” Visit maymont.org to see the new logo and all! (Maymont)

The Byrd Theatre just got a whole lot cooler: Literally. The premier movie palace in Carytown was closed from July 8 to July 12 to get an upgraded HVAC system installed. And the timing couldn’t be better — Richmond’s still seeing plenty of scorching temps this month. Relieve yourself from the heat and catch The Little Mermaid sing-along, The Twilight Saga, Total Recall, A Star is Born, Jaws, or any of the other classics the iconic Richmond theater is showing before the end of July. Calling all wordsmiths: RVA Mag is publishing a Virginia literary anthology, and the pub wants to review your work for consideration. Submit poetry, fiction, flash fiction, nonfiction, essays, or what have you, and look out for the limited-run, bound book in the coming months. Submissions are accepted through Monday, August 19, and you can peep all other instructions here. Good luck; we can’t wait to read what you wrote! (Instagram)

Another Richmonder to Know: Jillean McCommons, assistant professor of history and Africana studies at the University of Richmond, earned the Wilma Dykeman “Faces of Appalachia” Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship this year. The annual award supports a scholarship on gender, race, and/or ethnicity in Appalachia, and Jillean plans to put the funds toward work on her in-progress book, which “explores the history of the Black Appalachian Commission, a grassroots organization created in 1969 to advocate for the economic needs of Black people in the mountains.” (RVAHub)

Salads and grain bowls incoming: Roots Natural Kitchen is bringing its third location to the Richmond area. The Charlottesville-based restaurant will take up a 3,000-square-foot space at 14207 Winterview Pkwy in Chesterfield and serve its menu of ~$12 salads and grain bowls featuring grilled chicken, barbecue tofu, mushrooms, and more. An opening date hasn’t been announced, but you can keep your eyes on things at rootsnaturalkitchen.com/locations/ and get your fix in the meantime in the West End or VCU. (Richmond BizSense)

Disney in RVA: Richmond magazine (soft-)served a delish article on one of Study Hall’s tastiest summer offerings, the Dole Whip. Co-owner Meryl Hillerson grew up in California, where the inspo for the sweet treat has its origins at Disneyland, and she and co-owner Alex Zavaleta have been paying tribute to the swirly sweet for a couple summers now. Meryl told the mag, “It’s probably one of our most asked-for flavors.” So, don’t skip — get yourself to Study Hall before summer ends!  (Richmond magazine)
