The Trendspotter: June 2022
We’re back again with your monthly dose of must-know news, The Trendspotter! This content series features monthly roundups of the newest and hottest businesses (namely, restaurants and bars!) around RVA.
We’re halfway through the year, but there’s no shortage of new, hoppin’ spots to keep us busy throughout the second half — and beyond.

Blue Habanero
What it is: Our new go-to spot for street tacos and tequila.
Why we love it: They’re living way up to their name with their specialties including the Spicy Burrito and Jalapeños Nortenos, and we’re all about the heat over here. Wash that down with one of their many margarita options (or go for the flight of three), and you may quite literally transport to a sunny beach in Mexico.
Where to find it: 421 Strawberry St (The Fan)
Nami
What it is: The backdrop to our plans for celebrating International Sushi Day before, after, and on International Sushi Day this month.
Why we love it: At Nami, they focus on the flavor of the sea, “serving fresh and outstanding seafood.” And from the many stellar reviews they’ve already gotten during their opening weeks, it sounds like their service is just as delightful.
Where to find it: 218 E Main St (Monroe Ward)
The Spice & Tea Exchange of Richmond
What it is: A new, and very cute, spice and tea shop (but of course) to hit Carytown this week — opening day is today!
Why we love it: Just the look of this Southern Sweet Iced Tea Kit is quenching our it’s-HOT-out-there thirst already, and the shop’s got loads of other seasonal goodies — from other summer teas to summer seasonings to summer candles. And if you’re more into the classics, they’ve got you covered there, too.
Where to find it: 3007 W Cary St (Carytown)
Paper Tiger
What it is: A new comic book store concept from Don’t Look Back co-owner Hamooda Shami, opening next to the former home of Don’t Look Back South.
Why we love it: Hamooda plans to emphasize “collectible and vintage comics and trading cards” in the 2,600-square-foot store, which “will also carry limited selections of vintage and new toys, new comics, board games, and more.”
Where to find it: 7522 Forest Hill Ave (Oxford)
Richmond International Film Festival
What it is: A nearly week-long celebration of film and music, starting June 7 and running through June 12.
Why we love it: The fest features more than 150 national and local films and 35 musical performances. This collaborative platform for filmmakers, writers, and musicians brings together great talent, from established to up-and-coming artists, propelling forward and launching careers right from the River City.
