The Trendspotter: December 2024
We’re back again with your monthly dose of must-know news, The Trendspotter! This content series features monthly roundups of the newest and hottest businesses (namely, restaurants, bars, and then some!) around RVA.
Santa’s gotta make it to town, and so do you — there are new neighbors on the block, and they’re all on the Nice list.
Memi’s
What it is: The first Egyptian and Middle Eastern restaurant in Richmond
Why we love it: Owner Ramy Yacoub built the spot’s concept around honoring his mother, who immigrated to the US in 2007 and has decades of experience as a chef (and who now helms the restaurant’s kitchen!). The menu features their takes on traditional Egyptian dishes, and we’ve got eyes on the koshari, in partic — lentils, rice, and pasta topped with spicy tomato sauce, chickpeas, and caramelized onions.
Where to find it: 2229 W Main St (The Fan)
Susie’s
What it is: A Jewish-Moroccan deli bringing mouth-watering eats to Hop Craft Pizza & Beer’s former digs
Why we love it: Especially in these chilly temps, we’re craving comfort food, and Susie’s brings that and more with its menu of elevated soups, salads, sandwiches, and then some. Our personal recs include the Potato Latkes with Labneh & Apple Sauce, Matzo Ball Soup, and the Tony (Susie’s brisket, swiss cheese, caramelized onions and homemade horseradish crema on a sub roll).
Where to find it: 1600 W Cary St (The Fan)
Roastology
What it is: The new space in Scott’s Addition for a beloved coffee roaster
Why we love it: With the announcement of its W Cary St location closure earlier in the year, we were sad and happy at the same time — because while those doors were closing in The Fan, these doors were getting set to open in Scott’s Addition. And now they are, officially! Stop by the favorite coffee house for coffee and pastries to celebrate.
Where to find it: 3015 W Clay St (Scott’s Addition)
Padel Plant
What it is: An interesting new active and social experience coming to the Canal Walk(ish)
Why we love it: This new biz isn’t technically open yet (stay tuned for the fall), but its waitlist to join the club as a founding member is. Snag one of the 50 spots available, and keep working on that swing while the project planners keep working on the half-dozen padel courts, a few pickleball courts, and the space for sips and snacks.
Where to find it: 1201 Haxall Pt (Downtown)
Dinner Party
What it is: Carytown’s first wine shop and your new go-to spot for that, plus
Why we love it: With a name as cutie as that, we were hoping for an invite to the table immediately. This pink bottle shop offers all the essentials for your next shindig, including a variety of vino as well as a host of pantry staples. Come for the goods, stay for the vibe — the space is as cute as its name.
Where to find it: 3402 W Cary St (Carytown)
