The Trendspotter: November 2022
We’re back again with your monthly dose of must-know news, The Trendspotter! This content series features monthly roundups of the newest and hottest businesses (namely, restaurants and bars!) around RVA.
There’s a lot to be ~thankful~ for in RVA this month, including these spots that recently set up shop around the city.

Buna Kurs
What it is: Where to get your next caffeine fix and vegetarian eats.
Why we love it: Never have we ever had enough coffee spots, and now we get to add Buna Kurs to our must-try list. The Ethiopian coffee shop recently opened in Jackson Ward, and we can’t wait to warm our hands with a cup of Joe and enjoy the cafe’s delish-sounding food items, too: “injera fir fir, in which the Ethiopian fermented bread is sauteed in a spicy tomato sauce, as well as sambusa (a pastry stuffed with lentils, jalapenos and onion), and ertib (a potato sandwich).”
Where to find it: 402 1/2 N 2nd St Suite A (Jackson Ward)
Casta’s Cuban Rum Bar & Cerveza Garden
What it is: A Washington, DC, favorite that opened a second location in downtown Richmond.
Why we love it: The spot features Havana-inspired eats — empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, ceviche, and more — and 125+ rum options. It was also recently named Favorite Gathering Place at The 2022 RAMMYS, so we’re def psyched to make room for this Cuban-themed restaurant in our neck of the woods.
Where to find it: 700 E Main St (Downtown)
CNTR
What it is: A creative space for artists and small businesses, video productions, workshops, pop-ups, shows, and other events.
Why we love it: We love to see one creative supporting others, and that’s exactly what musician ILLA’s vision is for his new space, officially opening Friday, November 4. As he puts it, “This is a haven created by members of the community FOR THE COMMUNITY.”
Where to find it: 318 W Broad St Floor 1 (Jackson Ward)
TAOU
What it is: A creative arts and movement studio carving out space for visitors to “explore the self through various movement and artistic lenses.”
Why we love it: TAOU offers a non-judgmental, safe environment for Ricmonders to stretch, move, unwind, and build community, with an overall mission to bring “more creativity and joy into the often too serious health and wellness world.”
Where to find it: 3122 W Cary St #220 (Carytown)
GardenFest of Lights
What it is: A breathtaking, interactive experience at Lewis Ginter Botantical Garden.
Why we love it: From November 21, 2022, to January 8, 2023, flowers and petals are traded for millions of twinkling lights lining garden paths, trees, and bushes throughout the expansive grounds of the Lakeside neighborhood’s iconic landmark. USA Today voted the display one of the top ten Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights!
Where to find it: 1800 Lakeside Ave (Lakeside)
