Ed 226: Maker’s Market, Jazz Café, Hog on the Hill
Oh, hi!👋
Is The Patient creeping *the hell* out of anyone else? Between each week’s spooky ep and these cooler temps lately, we’re getting chills for more than one reason – but tbh, we’re kinda lovin’ it.
Bring on the ghosts, goblins, and, yes, even our inevitable moans-and-groans when it gets too cold; we’re ready for October! (But, like, if anyone knows what happened to September, fill us in. This month came and went, right?!)
Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including wine dinners (plural!), a green-thumb volunteer opp, a few spots to visit before they close up shop, and more.
THINGS WE’RE *WAY* LOVING THIS MONTH
It’s the end of another month, so here’s the low-down on a few of our favorite things for September!
Paige:
Stella’s Grocery - Westhampton Meze Bar: Stella’s is one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond, but since it’s hard to get a resy, I love stopping by the Meze Bar at Stella’s Grocery in Westhampton to get my fix. Their spreads, hummus bowls, and flatbreads are the best!
Lip Balm in Nude from Less Than: I popped into Less Than a few weeks ago to check out all their offerings and picked up this nude lip balm. It’s moisturizing and plant-based, and I’m addicted!
Kelsey:
LOVEVOLVE Natural Olive Wood Mini Heart: As you might’ve seen on Insta this week, I got to visit LOVEVOLVE recently and peruse their ~extremely sweet~ gift inventory. One of my favorite finds was the Natural Olive Wood Mini Heart. It’s SO soft and beautifully made – definitely keep it in mind for a stocking stuffer this year.
Belmont Pizzeria: It’s been a minute since I called in reinforcements from Belmont Pizzeria, but last week, I was OOO for a few days and thus OOG(roceries), too. The Quattro Formaggi pie came in clutch yet again.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW
Krystle Dandridge: We’re getting excited for the transition from “beach reads” to “cozy reads,” so it seems like now would be as good a time as any to S/O one of our fave local booksellers. Krystle owns The Book Bar — a shop that highlights BIPOC authors and brands — and posts some delightful book recs on Insta, might we add.
THE LATEST:
FALL PLANNING
Wine – it’s what’s for dinner: At Pizza Bones and Can Can Brasserie anyway. Starting this Wednesday, September 28 (and running through the end of October), the Union Hill pizza spot is hosting a wine dinner series, featuring various chefs and vendors. And next Tuesday, October 4, the Carytown favorite is getting in on the wine-dinner action with its Endless Sommer event, featuring a Terroirizer wine takeover and a menu inspired by Point Break. Perfecting the Pivot: The CEOs of Liznel and the BJohn Beauty are teaming up next Thursday, October 6, to host A Taste of Fabeaucon. The event will feature a panel discussion offering “a different perspective on entrepreneurship” and “a different look through the lens of a creative.” Enjoy lively conversation punctuated with wine tasting and DJ spins. (Eventbrite)
This wood do you (and the planet!) good: Capital Trees has a volunteer opp for you! Before we head into the thick of winter, the org is tending to the gardens at Great Shiplock Park and along the Low Line. Head downtown on Saturday, October 15, and help the cause with some prep work before things get really chilly out there. You can register here! (HandsOn Greater Richmond)
How bazaar: On Sunday, October 23, head to Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop in Scott’s Addition for the Starr Bazaar Maker’s Market. The afternoon shindig will feature live music, dozens of local vendors, Fugly Duckling eats, and, of course, crisp (and autumnal – our favorite!) cold ones. Start your holiday shopping a little early, and enjoy something delish to eat and drink while you do. (Instagram)
But if you’re looking for a li’l getaway on October 23: Make your way to Charlottesville instead. Two Up, Wine Down – hosted by Oenoverse, RichWine, and The Veraison Project (among many others) – is a wine festival highlighting BIPOC wine professionals, enthusiasts, and allies. Tickets are on sale for 15 bucks, before the price-hike this weekend, so get yours now and block off the cal. (ExploreTock)
Jazzing things up in the Fan: Mike’s Jazz Cafe has plans to move into Spoonbread Bistro’s former digs this November. The spot will include a dining space, jazz lounge, and bar, offering live music and a menu of soul food and seafood. (Richmond BizSense)
